25 brave soles took the trip to North County Dublin today to play in our last official outing of the 2026 season up in Skerries. With some reports of rain and some much colder weather than we had previously dealt with during the year, this was going to be a test. As it turned out, the weather was pretty perfect for golf and the course was in good nick too. That said, it is a very long course and one with pretty testing fairways, let alone anywhere outside it. The big question of the day though was who was going to grab that elusive Player of the Year title? Could the stand out performer of the year, Philip Butler, hold is nerve and grab enough points to see off the opposite? With both the Barrys and poised, it was going to be a nervy one. Surely Butsy had enough?? Well at the start of play, the leaderboard showed Butsy with a an 8 point lead over Barry Ward with Barry Daly just 1 point back and joining them on the last fourball was Ian Duffy who’s had another great year this year also. As is often the case when it comes to the last outing, it wasn’t anyone from the top four grouping who shone on the day. Our final winner for the 2026 season was actually committee member Ray Kelly with a fabulous 35 points winning on a count back. In fact 3 golfers managed to grab a score of 35 points today on a really tough course to navigate so a notable mention to both David Geraghty and Andrew Harte also on just missing the top gong for the day. Great golf lads!
All of this high drama meant that the final table saw Ray jumping right back into contention and waiting for the last group to come into the clubhouse before finding out if it was good enough to secure a Player of the Year title….
Alas, Philip managed to hold his never really well and secured a final tally of 33 points underscoring his excellent golf all year and ultimately resulting in him being crowned the category 2 winner for today and of course the Parish Golf Society Player of the Year for 2026 - CONGRATS BUTSY - very well deserved indeed!!!
