Today may well have been the hottest day of the year so far, but that didn’t deter us from travelling south (or trying to) down the N11 to Enniskerry for our day of day’s - Robbie’s Captain’s Day at the beautiful East course in Powerscourt golf club. It seemed like it was going to be an uphill battle at first when the M50 ground to a halt at the junction of Stillorgan and that wasn’t because the bus had to take us over the mountains via Glencullen to get back down into Powercourt just to make our tee off timeslot 😎. As is tradition, it was the turn of this year’s captain ROBBIE WALSH to start us off with the ceremonial first tee off of the day. There was a great atmosphere and banter as we waited in on Robbie (last year’s play of the year of course) to show us all the way with a steller drive right down the middle of the fairway. Much to everyone’s amusement though, it was a case of “FOUR RIGHT” with his first ball as it went closer to the road then the fairway 😳. His second, was only margainly better but despite the nervy start, he produced some of the magic that made him 2024 Player of the Year during the front 9 bagging himself a birdie and a chip-in eagle after also managing to scramble for a point on the first hole. In true style, he finished the day with 39 points on his big day!
Here he is getting us started with the all important first tee off of the morning:

As for how the rest of the day went, it was certainly a challenge to stay cool at times but the course was fabulous and the craic was mighty as you’d expect, notwithstanding the somewhat poor standard of some of the greens.
It was very pleasing to see a new winner today too and everyone was delighted that Stephen Cooney picked Captain’s Day as his day to break his duck and get a coveted overall winner title to his name! Congratulations Stephen on a fabulous score of 39. Here’s the classified results and our winners getting their presentations in the club.
